What is the Alonissos Underwater Museum?

The Alonissos Underwater Museum is one of Greece’s most extraordinary attractions, often hailed as the “Parthenon of shipwrecks.” Located in the Aegean Sea, near the island of Alonissos, this underwater museum offers divers an unparalleled opportunity to explore a historic shipwreck dating back to the 5th century BC.

The Peristera Shipwreck

The museum centerpiece is the Peristera shipwreck, an ancient merchant vessel that sank around 425 BC and 415 BC. The wreck was discovered in the 1990s and is one of the oldest known underwater archaeological sites. It provides a fascinating glimpse into ancient Greek maritime trade, complete with amphorae and other artifacts still lying on the seabed. Discovered in 1985 by fisherman Dimitris Mavrikis near the west coast of Peristera Island, east of Alonissos, the site was investigated by the Ephorate of Marine Antiquities during the summers of 1992 and 1993. The underwater excavation at a depth of 26 meters posed a significant challenge to archaeologists, requiring specialized techniques different from those used in traditional museum settings.

A Dive into the Past

Certified divers can explore the site at depths ranging from 21 to 28 meters. The clear waters of the Aegean provide excellent visibility, allowing divers to appreciate the site’s historical significance and natural beauty fully. For those who aren’t certified divers, glass-bottom boat tours and virtual reality experiences are available at the Alonissos Blue Dream Museum on the island. The Peristera shipwreck is the oldest accessible shipwreck in the world. This ancient vessel measured approximately 30 meters in length and 10 meters in width. It carried wine from Northern Greece (Macedonia) and the Northern Sporades. Remarkably, 3,000 intact amphorae have been found, forming a 25-meter-long pile on the sea floor that outlines the ship’s substantial size.

Conservation and Education

The museum not only serves as a tourist attraction but also plays a crucial role in marine conservation and archaeological research. Efforts are continually made to preserve the site and its artifacts, providing valuable insights into ancient Greek history and underwater archaeology.
