Skopelos Art Foundation Center (SkopArt)

The Skopelos Foundation for the Arts, commonly known as SkopArt, is a non-profit cultural hub founded in 1999 by New York printmaker Gloria Carr. After visiting Skopelos in 1996, Carr was inspired by the island’s vivid light, lush greenery, and authentic Greek charm, and envisioned a space where local and international artists could create, collaborate, and explore Greek island culture.

SkopArt’s mission is to promote visual arts, cultural exchange, and artistic education, offering residencies and workshops in ceramics, printmaking, painting, sculpture, textile arts, and mixed media. Its studios are designed for artists of all levels, blending professional equipment with a scenic Aegean Sea setting, perfect for creative inspiration and cultural tourism.

The ceramics studio features pottery wheels, electric kilns, a slab roller, and panoramic views of Alonnisos, and collaborates with master potter Nikos Rodios, known for his onyx-like firing technique inspired by ancient Greek vessels. The printmaking studio offers presses, exposure units, and digital tools in a sunlit space with uninterrupted sea views.

Since 2001, SkopArt has hosted artist residencies from April to October, accommodating five to ten participants at a time. Residents receive access to studios, internet, and shared kitchen space, while accommodation is arranged independently. The Foundation is connected with renowned institutions like Pratt Institute, George Mason University, and the Art Institute of Chicago, and supports a vibrant international community of artists.

Why Visit: SkopArt is not only a center for artistic creation but also a top cultural attraction in Skopelos. Tourists can explore its collection of over 500 works, enjoy art workshops, exhibitions, and community projects, and attend events like the Skopelos International Film Festival for Youth (SIFFY). It offers a unique glimpse into the island’s creative spirit, art tourism, and Hellenic heritage, making it a must-visit for culture and art lovers.
