The monastery of Sotiros, on Skopelos island, was built in the dawn of the 16th century. The temple of the church is very impressive, even though it is not laced with gold like many others are. Actually, it dates back to the year when the monastery was built. Furthermore, there are also many icons dating back to the 16th century.

Back in time, pirates made a lot of attacks on the Greek islands. They also threatened Skopelos island. In fact, the Monastery of Sotiros had been a refuge for those hiding when Skopelos was raided by pirates.  Moreover, the Monastery of Sotiros was a safe place for those trying to get away from the Turks during the Turkish dominance.

Iera Moni Sotiros Skopelos celebrates the Transfiguration of Christ on the 6th of August. Not only on Skopelos island but all over Greece. On that day, traditionally the vines are blessed and the locals taste the first grapes of the season. They also share grapes with all the pilgrims and visitors that happen to be there.
