SOTIROS MONASTERY

The monastery of Sotiros is right across from the monastery of Evangelistria. You can reach the monastery by car or on foot even though it is an uphill road to get there.

The monastery was built in the dawn of the 16th century. The temple of the church is impressive even though it is not laced with gold like many others are. It dates back to the year when the monastery was built. There are also many icons dating back to the 16th century.

The monastery has been a refuge for those hiding from times when the island of Skopelos was raided by pirates and also for those trying to get away from the Turks during the Turkish dominance.

The monastery celebrates the Transfiguration of Christ on the 6th of August. On that day traditionally the vines are blessed and the locals taste the first grapes of the season. They also share grapes with all the pilgrims and visitors that happen to be there.

Directions: From the town of Skopelos drive on the coastal road towards Mt Palouki. At the end of the road, turn left and follow the signs to Iera Moni Sotiros. Make sure that when you get to the fork on the road you keep to your right. 1.7 km or about a five minute drive on the same road will get you to the monastery.
