Since 2018, the Rebetiko Festival has been established as an institution in the cultural events of Skopelos. Since then until today 4 very successful festivals have been held with great success. Only one year, in 2020, due to the global pandemic, the festival did not take place. The institution was established by the Board of the Cultural and Folklore Association with the valuable cooperation of the Municipality of Skopelos and the Region of Thessaly.
The main venue of the festival is under the Panagitsa of Pyrgos, in the old harbor.
The Festival not only glorifies the work and memory of the worthy folk composers and singers of the Rebetiko but also promotes and promotes in an excellent and very accessible way the musical tradition of the island.
The festival “Days of Rebetiko” is organized every year in Skopelos and has become very popular on the island and beyond. Artists from all over Greece and the world participate in the festival and present their repertoire. The festival includes concerts, workshops, exhibitions, and seminars on folk instruments and vocal music about rebetiko singing and its history. Every year renowned musicians, instrumentalists, and speakers are invited to present their work and use their knowledge through seminars and other interesting cultural activities.
The 5th festival “Days of Rebetika” will open its curtain for the summer of 2023 from 11/7/2023 to 14/7/2023. This summer, apart from a tribute to the renowned artists of the genre, concerts, and other seminars and events, the Skopelos rebetiko Festival will host an international conference of international friends and scientists from Greece and abroad on the history and development of rebetiko music.
Also this year, two outstanding virtuosos of bouzouki and guitar will honor the festival with their presence. Mr. Vangelis Trigkas and Mr. Kyriakos Gouventas.
The aim of the Municipal Council of the Cultural and Folklore Association was from the very beginning the dissemination and preservation of the intangible cultural heritage. Skopelos with great success manages to lead this project, and through the festival promoted rebetiko music, Greece, and the island itself not only domestically but all over the world.
