What to Expect

The festival promises three unforgettable days filled with the timeless rhythms of rebetiko, performed by some of the most celebrated artists in the genre.

The Soul of Rembetiko

Rembetiko music, often referred to as the “Greek blues,” has deep roots in the country’s history. Emerging in the early 20th century, this genre reflects the struggles, joys, and everyday lives of the urban working class. Its lyrics often touch on themes of love, hardship, exile, and social injustice, resonating deeply with audiences across generations.

The origins of rebetiko can be traced to the influx of refugees from Asia Minor in the 1920s, who brought with them their music, culture, and stories. These influences blended with local Greek traditions, creating a distinctive sound characterized by heartfelt lyrics and the soulful melodies of instruments like the bouzouki, baglama, and guitar. In 2017, UNESCO recognized rembetiko as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, further cementing its significance in Greek culture.
