Giorgos Lithadiotis is a third-generation lantern-maker in Skopelos, carrying on a family tradition that began with his grandfather, Kanaris Lithadiotis. Kanaris was the first in the family to craft elegant lanterns with intricate ornaments and unique techniques. At a time when electricity was not yet available, these lanterns were essential, lighting homes, monasteries, and churches across the island. They were also part of local customs, as grooms would carry a lantern to the bride’s house.

Giorgos learned the art of lantern-making from his father, Vasilis, from a very young age. He mastered traditional techniques, creating lanterns with stamped designs and floral patterns, including lanterns for horses and wagons that once filled Skopelos, Glossa, and Skiathos.

Today, Giorgos continues to produce traditional lanterns and naval traffic lights for ships, using the skills passed down from his grandfather and father. Since 1978, he has operated his own workshop, working with materials such as galvanized steel, copper, zinc, tin, alpaca, and brass—known for its durability and flexibility. In addition, he crafts silver jewelry and other artisanal creations.

His creations are available at Fanari, the shop he runs with his wife, Ourania, in Skopelos Town, where visitors can find lanterns, silver jewelry, copper artworks, and traditional Greek folk art. The shop is located in the Sofadakia area.
