Panagia Livadiotissa or Zoodochos Pigi Monastery

 

The Monastery of Zoodochos Pigi or Panagia at Livadi, situated in Ampeliki near Skopelos town. The Monastery Panagia Livadiotissa comes with two names Zoodochos Pigi Monastery or Panagia at Livadi. There is a well-known tradition about its foundation. About 350 years ago, the waves washed away the icon of the Virgin Mary. Following that event, the monastery was established.

The monastery commemorates Orthodox Sunday, commencing the Litany from Panagia in Livadi.

Panagia Livadiotissa has been affiliated with Agia Katerini of Mount Sinai It came under the jurisdiction of Agia Katerini of Mount Sinai.

The uninhabited Moni Zoodochos Pigi or Panagia at Livadi in Skopelos occupies a spot in the meadow.  The monastery is close to the sea and provides stunning vistas of the Aegean Sea. Nonetheless, dense trees encircle the monastery, rendering it impossible to spot from a distance. Nowadays it is not home to any monks.

Even though monks used to live inside the Moni during the last century. There is no official old document related to the history of Skopelos Moni Zoodochos Pigi. A dedicatory inscription inside the monastery’s catholic informs us that in 1860 the protosynagogue of Sinaitic monk Ambrosios resided in Moni, and he was also the steward of the monastery. Today the monastery belongs to a private owner.

The main feature of the church is the single nave with a wooden roof temple. Several significant icons reside within this sacred space. These include a late Byzantine carved icon portraying the Assumption of the Virgin at its focal point, encircled by miniature depictions of the 24 stanzas of the Akathist Hymn. Additionally, there is the icon of the Virgin Mary of Zoodochos Pigi, crafted by the Cretan painter Antonios Agorastos in 1676, which holds a revered status due to its miraculous reputation.
