Skopelos Antoniou Family
Local Products of Skopelos
Skopelos is famous for many of the local products it produces. One of these is pure virgin olive oil.
The Antoniou family has been operating the traditional olive press since 1890. The olive mill is located in Glossa Village of Skopelos Island. Antoniou’s business, producing excellent quality virgin olive oil is traditional and family-run.
The creative journey of the company was started by the family’s great-grandfather George I. Antoniou in 1890. In those years there was a traditional olive mill and the means used to crush the olives was the classic stone mill and the help of animals.
The journey continued with Grandfather John G. Antoniou. He followed the evolution of the times and applied more modern methods to the olive press. He used hydraulic presses and also centrifugal machines when they came to the fore.
Today the Antoniou family, with respect to tradition and many years of experience in the industry, has modern facilities in Glossa Skopelos.
The main concern of the company is the production, selection, and standardization of extra virgin olive oil of excellent quality. The olive oil should always contain rich nutrients, and keep the perfect aroma and the unique fruity taste that only fresh and healthy olive fruit offers.
The area of the traditional olive groves is 60 acres in total and they are located in the northwest of Skopelos and around the village of Glossa at an altitude of 250m.
For the production of olive oil in Antoniou Family, olives of the Amfissi and Koroneiki varieties are used.
The Antoniou olive press has a 1,000 sqm area that he has designed as a museum with old machinery and tools.
It remains open all year round and by appointment, visitors can arrange their personal tour of the area.
At the site, visitors will learn a lot about the production process and many other interesting facts about the blessed fruit of the olive.
