Skopelos has a rich history that dates back to Ancient years. Back then the island’s name was Peparithos. The brother of Stafylos, Peparithos, the island’s first settlers, gave this name. Stafylos and Peparithos were the sons of the ancient god of wine Dionysos and Princess Ariadne of Crete.

The name “Skopelos” is believed to have originated from the Greek word “skopelos,” which means “small rock”.

🌄 Topographic Terrain:

Skopelos is part and the largest island of the Northern Sporades island group in the Aegean Sea. Spanning an area of 95.8 km², Skopelos Island is a refuge of natural grandeur. From lush forests to blue coasts, its diversified scenery offers a feast for the senses. The coast perimeter is 67 km, with a maximum length of 17 km, and a maximum width of 8 km. At 681 meters (Delphi Mountain) and 546 meters (Palouki Mountain) above sea level, its highest points have panoramic views of the surrounding coastline and the Aegean Sea.

The island belongs to the province of Magnesia and contains a single municipality. The capital is Skopelos Chora, while the other popular villages are Glossa and Elios.

Skopelos is often referred to as the “Island of Churches” due to its abundance of beautiful Orthodox churches and chapels. There are reportedly approximately 365 churches and monasteries, scattered across the island. Such as the days of the years. Many of them remain closed throughout the year, except for the feast day of the church’s patron.
